I make my kids go to school all year round, and that’s because I don’t want them to suffer from the summer slide.
So this summer, we’re going to be doing something that is very tried and true for us. I grab each of the kids these summer bridge workbooks, which are based on their grade level, and honestly, they have been such a good middle ground! They are structured enough to keep their brains active, but not so intense that they feel like they’re still in school all summer. They only need to do two pages a day, and I know it says it’s about 15 minutes per day, but I feel like it’s closer to 15 and 30 minutes.
I’ve also made a summer schedule so that way we have some type of structure these next few months. So here’s our daily schedule:

By 8 a.m., you just have to be dressed and up and ready for the day. 8:30am is breakfast, and 9 a.m. is your summer workbooks. At 10 a.m., we have our daily activities. And for our daily activities, here’s what I’m looking at:

These are things that I know my kids will love or things that I want them to start being interested in. And the one thing that I’m really excited about for our summer is our summer reading list. Specifically, I picked a bunch of classic books that are very 90s childhood. The kind of books that I grew up reading during summer break.
I really want this summer to feel slow, intentional, and fun! But I also want my kids to have structure.
I want them to go into next year confident and prepared instead of spending the first two months trying to catch up. And I know there’s going to be people who like, “kids need breaks”. Yes, they need breaks, which is why they’re only going to be doing only 15-30 minutes of school work. We also have to recognize these kids need structure and they need to make sure that they’re staying on top of things because we all have seen the reading test scores of our nation. Our kids need help. I do not want my kids to become a statistic. I want my kids to be able to be on their reading level or higher.
I want my kids to learn, but I also want them to have fun, which is why I created this schedule!
